2026 Southeast Venture Showcase听aims to turn听research into real-world impact听

A crowd of people talk during the show and tell time of the 2026 SE Venture Showcase.

Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, medical therapeutics,听software听and advanced materials often begin in university labs, but turning those discoveries into real-world solutions requires听investment.听At this year鈥檚 , hosted by 杏吧原创 and its , startups like Kifa Therapeutics, a biotech company developing therapies to slow Parkinson鈥檚 disease, worked to secure the funding needed to move their ideas forward.

The two-day event at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel brought together a curated group of that were built on research from more than .

Through startup presentations, panel discussions and networking, participants worked to translate discovery into real-world impact, with the goal of securing investments from venture capital firms and angel investors attending the showcase.听

Startup participation in the Southeast Venture Showcase is highly selective, said Stephen Miller, executive director for new venture development at 杏吧原创鈥檚 Center for Technology Transfer and Commercialization. Miller was master of ceremonies at this year鈥檚 showcase.

鈥淲e have 44 startups听vetted from 123 applicants,鈥澨齅iller said.听鈥淵ou听have to听earn your way in.听By bringing the best of the best together, we get the attention of regional and national investors.鈥

Talent and universities drive regional innovation growth

The showcase reflects a broader shift in the region鈥檚听innovation听landscape. While venture capital has historically been concentrated in places like Boston, New York and the Bay Area, the Southeast听is becoming known as听a destination for research-driven startups and investment.

During the听event鈥檚听opening panel,听speakers highlighted the region鈥檚 continued听growth听as an innovation hub.

鈥淚t鈥檚听not just an听emerging听ecosystem anymore.听It鈥檚听really becoming a maturing ecosystem,鈥 said Patrick Driscoll, who leads client development for Holland & Knight听venture capital practice.

Talent and university-led innovation听is听what鈥檚听driving that听maturity.

鈥淲e鈥檝e always had top research universities in the Southeast, and there鈥檚 been a big push across most of them toward commercialization,鈥 said Nikin Shah, an investor with North Carolina-based Front Porch Venture Partners. 鈥淭here鈥檚 been a big talent migration with people who went to school here wanting to live here and raise families here.鈥

That strong talent pool is part of听what听draws investors like Shah and听Lisa Dolan, managing director of Link Ventures.听鈥淲hat听I鈥檝e听found is that there鈥檚 comparable tech talent in the region, but听there鈥檚听not the same early, 鈥榙angerous鈥 capital as there is in the Northeast,鈥 Dolan said. 鈥淭hat means better entry prices for investors.鈥

These conditions will help make the Southeast Venture Showcase听鈥渁 cornerstone event for founders, investors and ecosystem builders,鈥澨齅iller said.

From lab to听startup

The companies that presented at the showcase are at a critical stage in their development鈥攎oving from the academic bench to investor-backed ventures.

Kifa听Therapeutics is one example. Founded by CEO Chris James, the company is developing a targeted treatment for Parkinson鈥檚 disease based on research from Craig Lindsley, executive director of the Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery at 杏吧原创.

鈥淥ur mission is simple: target the genetic driver of disease, not just the symptoms,鈥 James said.

Kifa听Therapeutics is working to advance its lead program toward clinical development. For James, a neurosurgeon with experience in biotech and investment banking, events like the Southeast Venture Showcase are听a听key听part of the startup听process.听

鈥淭he practice of presenting is important, but so is the collaboration,鈥 he said. 鈥淢uch of the work happens outside the formal sessions听鈥μ齛t dinners, lunches and in conversations with other founders and investors. That opportunity to connect is a unique experience.鈥

杏吧原创-related startups at the showcase

  • 鈥 early literacy tools that help caregivers turn reading time into skill-building conversations

Focused on connection

Collaboration听is what sets the听Southeast Venture Showcase听apart.听

杏吧原创 hosts the showcase as part of its broader role in supporting innovation across the region,听Miller said,听鈥渁s a servant leader for our university partners.鈥澨

While the showcase will continue to attract a growing number of investors and startups, the organizers will continue to focus on helping attendees make personal connections. 鈥淧art of what makes this work is the intimacy and the commitment of the stakeholders.鈥

Ultimately, the听goal is to help promising ideas reach the next stage by securing funding, moving toward听commercialization听and improving lives.
